Converse has changed fast. The railroad town named for a Southern Pacific engineer had about 900 residents in 1965 and more than 27,000 by 2020. Ideal Precision Roofing & Exteriors is a San Antonio based, veteran-owned roofing company in business since 2000, and our Gulfdale Street office is about 11 miles from Converse.
We repair, replace and inspect roofs on homes and businesses across the city, and we also handle the siding, gutters and windows that hail tends to hit at the same time. Every job starts with a free roof inspection, photos of what we find and a written estimate. We are a GAF President’s Club award winner.

The September 11, 2026 hailstorm
On Friday night, September 11, 2026, a severe thunderstorm moved over the city. The National Weather Service placed it near Kirby and Converse at 10:10 p.m., moving southwest, and later logged a report of hail up to 2.5 inches across based on numerous photos from town showing 2 to 2.5 inch stones along with broken windshields and car windows. Dime- to golf-ball-size hail was also reported in the Paloma subdivision, and KSAT viewers shared photos of the hail from Converse and the Northeast Side.
Hail that size can crack or bruise shingles, dent metal roofing, vents and gutters, split siding and break windows. Some damage is obvious. Some only shows up as granule loss or soft spots once someone is on the roof. If your home was in the storm’s path, we will inspect it for free and document damage with photos and a written estimate you can share with your insurance company. The Texas Department of Insurance advises reporting property damage to your insurer as soon as possible.
While you wait for an inspection, take dated photos of anything you can see from the ground, such as dented gutters, torn window screens, damaged siding and shingle pieces in the yard. Keep receipts for any emergency repairs. If water is coming in, call us for emergency roof repair so a small leak does not turn into ceiling and insulation damage.
What Converse roofs deal with
The population more than doubled between 2000 and 2020, so a big share of homes sit in newer subdivisions, alongside older neighborhoods from earlier decades of growth. A roof that is only 10 or 15 years old is not immune to hail. Older homes bring the usual age-related issues: worn flashing, cracked pipe boots, tired decking and attics that may not be vented well.
Heat works on every roof here. Attic ventilation matters because San Antonio’s average August high is 96°F, with about 122 days a year at 90°F or hotter, according to National Weather Service normals. A hot attic ages shingles faster and makes the air conditioner work harder.
If hail or age means it is time to replace, we will walk you through asphalt shingle and metal options and explain the trade-offs in cost, lifespan and appearance. Shops, offices and apartment communities with flat or low-slope roofs can ask about TPO and flat roofing.
Roof permits and contractor registration
Converse requires a permit for roofing and has its own re-roof permit application. General and trade contractors register with the city, and applications can be submitted online through SmartGov or in person at the Building Department, 406 S. Seguin. Fees are due when you apply, and the city says simple applications usually take about a week. Its re-roof form also asks for a signed completion letter or a third-party inspection report once the job is done, and starting without a permit brings extra fees.
After a big storm, plenty of unfamiliar roofers start knocking on doors. Before you sign, ask whether the contractor is registered with the city and will get the re-roof permit. The Building Permits page has the forms, and the office at (210) 658-8285 can confirm current requirements. If your subdivision has an HOA, check its rules on roof color and materials too.

Frequently asked questions about roofing in Converse
My roof looks fine from the ground. Could the September hail still have damaged it?
Yes. Bruised shingles, lost granules and small dents in vents and flashing are hard to see from the yard. A free inspection with photos shows you exactly what is up there.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof?
Yes. The city has a dedicated re-roof permit application, and contractors must register with the Building Department. Call (210) 658-8285 to confirm current requirements.
Can a roofer pay or waive my insurance deductible?
No. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that state law prohibits roofers from waiving deductibles or offering rebates. What we provide is a free inspection, photos and a written estimate you can share with your insurance company.
