Asphalt shingle roofing in San Antonio
Ideal Precision Roofing & Exteriors installs and repairs asphalt shingle roofing in the San Antonio area. Shingles are the visible surface of a larger system, so the estimate should explain the roof preparation, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, and accessories as well as the shingle selection.
Compare the exact product
Architectural styles, colors, impact ratings, algae resistance, and warranty terms vary by product. Ask for the manufacturer’s current information for the exact shingle being quoted. A familiar brand name alone does not establish every performance feature.
GAF’s impact-resistant roofing information distinguishes rated products. An impact rating is not a promise that a roof cannot be damaged by hail. Ask your insurer directly whether the selected product qualifies for any policy discount.
What should a shingle replacement include?
- Removal or other handling of existing materials as specified.
- Deck condition assessment and pricing for any necessary repairs.
- Compatible underlayment and edge details.
- Flashing and transitions around roof penetrations and walls.
- Shingles, starter products, ridge components, and ventilation details.
- Site protection, debris removal, and completion documentation.
Access, pitch, roof area, existing layers, and hidden damage affect the estimate. Discuss material staging and vehicles, outdoor belongings, pets, and occupants before work begins. See roof replacement planning for the wider project scope.
Repairing an existing shingle roof
A missing or damaged shingle does not automatically mean the entire roof needs replacing. The surrounding material’s condition, the extent of damage, and whether a durable repair is possible all matter. Aging shingles and unavailable matching products can limit repair options.
Request a roof inspection if there are recurring leaks, visible damage, or uncertainty after a storm. Do not judge the whole roof solely by its age or a photograph from the street.
Certification and warranty questions
GAF’s contractor directory lists Ideal Precision’s San Antonio location as Master Elite certified with a President’s Club distinction. Ask which manufacturer warranty is available for the proposed roof and whether registration is required.
GAF Golden Pledge and other enhanced warranty options have eligibility requirements and written terms. Product coverage and installation coverage are different; request the documents for your particular project before deciding.

What heat and hail do to shingles
Heat is the everyday stress. San Antonio’s normal August high is 96°F, and the city averages about 122 days a year at 90°F or higher. Over time that heat dries out the asphalt, loosens granules and wears on the sealant bonds that hold shingles down, especially on south- and west-facing slopes.
Hail is the sudden stress. The National Weather Service documented hail up to 4.5 inches in the April 12, 2016 storm, with damage estimated around $1.36 billion. Smaller hail can still bruise shingles, crack the mat underneath and knock off the granules that shield the asphalt from UV.
Attic ventilation affects how fast shingles age, too. The International Residential Code generally calls for net free vent area equal to 1/150 of the vented attic space, or 1/300 when intake and exhaust are balanced with the upper vents near the ridge. Shingle manufacturers set their own ventilation requirements as well. Our attic venting page explains the options.
Signs your shingle roof needs attention
- Granules piling up in gutters or at downspout outlets
- Shingles that are curling, cupping, cracked or missing
- Dark, soft-looking spots, or bare patches where granules are gone
- Creased or lifted shingles after strong wind
- Nail heads that are exposed or pushing up under shingles
- Ceiling stains, or damp or darkened decking in the attic
One or two isolated problems can often be repaired. Brittle shingles and granule loss across entire slopes usually mean the roof is near the end of its service life.
Wind and impact ratings explained
- ASTM D3161: a fan-driven wind test. Class F, tested at 110 mph, is the highest class.
- ASTM D7158: an uplift test with Classes D, G and H, rated for 90, 120 and 150 mph.
- UL 2218: an impact test using steel balls from 1.25 to 2 inches in diameter. Class 4 is the highest rating. Many Class 4 shingles use polymer-modified asphalt that flexes on impact instead of cracking.
Texas insurers may offer a discount for Class 4 roofing, and each insurer sets its own amount. Ask your agent before you choose, and check the product label for the impact rating.
As one example of an architectural shingle we install, GAF lists Timberline HDZ with ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind ratings. Timberline UHDZ is a thicker shingle with a dual shadow line for added depth. Whatever product you’re considering, we’ll show you its published ratings so you can compare like for like.
What to expect on replacement day
Most single-family re-roofs take one to three days, depending on size, weather and decking repairs. A few things help the work go smoothly:
- Move cars out of the garage and driveway before work starts.
- Keep pets indoors and away from the work area.
- Cover stored items in the attic, since dust and small debris can fall through during tear-off.
- Take fragile items off walls and shelves, because vibration from nail guns can shift them.
We pull a permit where the city requires one, install to the manufacturer’s instructions and local code, run a magnetic sweep for nails, and finish with a final walkthrough.

Asphalt shingle roof FAQ
How long does a shingle roof last here?
There’s no single number. The product line, attic ventilation, installation quality, roof color and orientation, and hail history all play a part. Once a roof passes about 15 years, a free roof inspection will tell you where it stands.
Can new shingles go over my old ones?
Building code does not allow a new layer over a roof that is water-soaked, deteriorated or already has two layers. Even where one recover layer is allowed, a tear-off lets the decking be inspected and repaired and gives new drip edge and flashing a clean surface to seal against.
Can my HOA stop me from choosing impact-resistant shingles?
Generally not. Texas Property Code Section 202.011 limits an association’s ability to prohibit shingles designed to be wind and hail resistant, more energy efficient or solar generating, as long as, once installed, they resemble the shingles used or allowed in the subdivision, are more durable and of equal or better quality, and match the look of the surrounding properties. It’s still wise to submit the product and color for approval before work starts.
Does shingle color affect attic heat?
Lighter colors reflect more sunlight than dark ones, and some manufacturers offer reflective shingles designed to run cooler. The effect inside the home also depends on attic ventilation and insulation, so color is only one part of keeping the attic cooler. Check your HOA’s color rules before you decide.
